Beyond just a common criminal, you are a noble heir of the criminal world. You know the lavish and luxury of a wealthy life. You hold sway amongst an orginization, that in turn, holds sway over the unlawful dark-side of society. Perhaps the heir to a large and well known mafia family, or the head of an up and coming thieves guild with friends in high places. You might be the kind of person who views what they do as a necessary evil, doing the dirty work other won't. Perhaps you just wish to take hold of all the power you can grasp with two hands. Or maybe you disagree with your upbringing and the lot in life you have found

Your family holds great sway in the underbelly of society and this can be translated to the top side as well. You know most, if not all, of the corrupt nobles and criminal organizations near your home, and can quickly learn of those in other cities given a day. Your family's connections can be used to gain access to certain events or areas (at the DM's discretion). You also hold the respect and fear of criminals who know of your family and you can secure audience with the bosses of other families.Suggested Characteristics
You can use the tables presented for the "Criminal" and "Noble" backgrounds in the PHB. If you roll on the criminal's "Specialty" table, consider having it be your family or organization's specialty, not yours.
