Tri-Boar Trail Ambush

Session Chronicle

The Journey Begins

We meet as a group of adventurers at the infamous Tri-boar Trail. To get here, some of us travel south from Neverwinter, while others come from elsewhere. However, all of us know Gundren Rockseeker is our benefactor for this mission.

Our job is to escort his trade goods and mining supplies to the settlement of Phandalin.

It is well known that the Tri-boar Trail is fraught with danger. Lately, there is not enough trade or traffic to warrant regular patrols from the Lord’s Alliance, and so this time of year is especially dangerous for travelers.

Gundren and his companion Sildar Hallwinter set out ahead of us to attend to important business, leaving us to guard and transport the wagon.

The Caravan

Alec & Brannick Cole: Two men with troublesome pasts, now bound by oath and honor, take point, assessing each other cautiously.
Rayel, Lena, and Pick/Pocket: Relax in the wagon.
Cel: Drives the oxen forward.
• The group banters, insults, and cajoles each other in a social dance.
Lucian: Quietly trails the others in the rearguard.

The Ambush

Things take a sudden turn when, up ahead, two horses are found dead in the center of the road, left peppered with arrows.

Brannick and Alec suspect danger, and Cel stops the oxen simultaneously.

• Cel sneakily hops off the wagon and creeps into the brush to investigate, unbeknownst to anyone.
• Before long, she finds a platoon of murderous goblins waiting in the woods.

As Alec and Brannick prepare to ready the group, Lucian saunters forward down the path.

Brannick grabs him by the clothing and pulls him close, beginning to reprimand him for his carelessness in a potentially lethal situation.

But it is already too late.

Lucian reacts first.

• Goblins charge from the brush.
• Lucian fires a blast of fire, instantly incinerating a goblinoid.

The Battle

The rest of the party springs into action.

Lena: Fires arcs of electricity from her fingertips, striking goblins who shriek in terror.
Cel & Rayel: Pepper enemies with arrows.
Pick/Pocket: Hurl vicious insults that deal psychic damage to the goblins.
Lucian: Sets goblin after goblin ablaze.
Alec & Brannick: Wade through enemies in brutal melee.

Notably, one goblin haphazardly kills his own allies.

• The party captures this goblin and binds him with rope.
• He agrees to lead them to Clarg, the leader of Cragmaw Cave.

From him, they learn:
Gundren has been taken to a castle along with a mysterious map.
Sildar has been taken to Cragmaw.

The Road to Cragmaw

After hiding their wagon off-road, Lucian threatens to burn the goblin prisoner alive.

The goblin agrees to lead the party back to its cave.

• Along the way, the goblin slyly tries to lead the party into pitfall traps.
• The party is able to circumnavigate the traps and reaches a babbling brook outside the cave.

Lost Advantage

The party stops for a while to debate whether they should kill the goblin, use him to infiltrate the cave under a ruse, or drop him in a hole until the cave is defeated.

They bicker loudly and extensively, losing their advantage.

They are ambushed again by goblin defenders of the cave.

The Second Fight

This time, the fight is not so smooth.

• The fighting is fierce.
Pick/Pocket: Blasts the goblins with illuminating light, making them easy targets.
Lucian: Unleashes a devastating flamethrower attack from his hands.
Cel: Is mortally wounded and rendered unconscious, struck by three arrows at once.

Thankfully, she is revived.

At the Cave’s Mouth

The party stands before Cragmaw Cave, ready to pursue their newly intertwined fates.

The path forward leads into darkness.

I really liked how you built up the tension around the investigation scene it felt immersive, especially the way the environment/details were described, it made it easy to picture everything. I’m curious though, are you planning to expand more on that mystery or reveal what’s actually behind it later on?
