Welcome to Xohana!

Xohana is a vibrant, player-driven Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) community inspired by the West Marches style but adapted into something uniquely our own. Unlike traditional D&D campaigns that follow a fixed weekly schedule with a consistent party and storyline, Xohana is designed around flexibility, player initiative, and immersive storytelling. Here, adventures unfold organically as players collaborate with Game Masters (GMs) and each other to shape a living universe.

As a community, Xohana strives to foster an environment that is welcoming, inclusive, and supportive. Whether you're a seasoned adventurer or completely new to D&D, you'll find a relaxed atmosphere where you can unwind, engage creatively, and make new friends after a busy day.

Our community adheres to Discord's Terms of Service. Xohana is a 21+ community. Explicit NSFW content is prohibited to maintain a comfortable space for all members.

What Sets Xohana Apart from Traditional West Marches?

West Marches campaigns typically involve no regular parties, schedules, or overarching plots, relying entirely on player-driven scheduling and exploration. Xohana incorporates these core elements but expands on them, creating a richer narrative environment:

  • Persistent Universe: All adventures connect through the central hub of Xohana Station and through the Mission Logs and other narrative tools. Here, stories intertwine organically, creating a dynamic universe.
  • Narrative Depth: Beyond simple exploration and combat, Xohana places strong emphasis on character development, collaborative storytelling, and immersive roleplay. Your actions don't just affect a single quest, they ripple outward, impacting lore, the community, and future narratives across the entire server.
  • Player Influence: Xohana empowers players through structured community participation, enabling members to propose new mechanics, lore, or server-wide events. Major decisions may even involve community-wide voting, giving player groups a direct voice alongside GMs and server staff.

How Do I Play in Xohana?

Gameplay in Xohana is flexible and tailored to accommodate busy lives. Sessions aren't fixed commonly weekly events, but instead are largely based on player availability and interest. Players are able to initiate adventures by coordinating with available GMs and assembling groups from the active community.

To get started:

  1. Read the Basic Rules of 5e (2024): Familiarize yourself with foundational gameplay mechanics to ease your transition into the game.

  2. Create your Character: Follow Xohana’s character creation guidelines and get approval from server staff.

  3. Get Registered: New characters are required to go through a Xohana Adventurer’s Guild Registration Quest prior to joining any other Quests (typically one week or less from approval). Prior to that, characters may still roleplay and interact with the server in other ways such as Downtime and Shops.

  4. Start Adventuring: After you’ve completed your XAG Registration Quest, your character is able to begin questing and you can apply for any adventure they are eligible for.

Why Are You Talking Like That?

Throughout the server, you will notice (with some exceptions, including this document in particular) that most of the communications, rulings, policies, and interactions take the form of In-Character (IC) perspectives, flavorings, and/or contexts. This is intentional, and done collaboratively in service of imagining a world together that feels both real and fantastical, organized yet able to be changed and molded.

Wherever possible and logical, we as a community strive to create as much of a “living world” as we can, in as many forms as that takes. This includes things like coming up with realistic in-world policies and rulings that mechanically impact your characters in ways that, from an Out-of-Character (OOC) perspective, the community may desire to limit in the interest of collaborative ongoing gameplay.

If you ever have a question on the official OOC context of any ruling, policy, announcement, or other communication issued by server staff, please do not hesitate to ping @Helper in the #help channel to get a direct OOC answer or clarification.

What Can I Do Outside of Quests?

Roleplay (RP)

Xohana is more than just a string of missions, it’s a living, breathing station where your character exists between adventures. Outside of quests, players have full access to various roleplaying channels under the Roleplay category. These are places you can flesh your characters out, interact with friends, and progress your story and experience without necessarily needing to be risking your life or participating in dangerous activity.

Whether you’re gathering intel in the market, debating philosophy in the plaza, or making a late-night hospital visit, every interaction helps you flesh out your character and create memories beyond combat. Every hour of roleplay will earn you various rewards, which you can find in the pinned messages of our #rp-log channel.

While roleplay doesn’t directly grant Badges, meaningful RP can lead to connections, story hooks, invitations to special events, and a richer experience on the server. If you ever want feedback or support for your RP scenes, Helpers and Lorekeepers are happy to offer suggestions.

Shops & Economy

The heart of Xohana Station is Starfall Square and its ever-changing marketplace of goods. Every character can visit a Magic Shop once per real-world day, rolling for what’s open and what’s in stock. They can also visit the mundane goods shops any time they’d like.

Shops are staffed by volunteer Merchants, who bring flavor to every transaction: haggle with a surly goblin, outwit a sentient purse, or just window-shop for the joy of it. Merchants won’t always be available when you ping, but this experience is entirely optional and does not impact your general ability to complete purchases

If you want to play a shopkeeper, apply for the Merchant role and help make the market feel alive! Shops refresh their inventory daily, with certain rare items, magical curiosities, and unique effects only available for limited windows. Need something unusual or to offload something you no longer need? Try the #auction-house channel to see if any other Adventurers are advertising their wares.

Housing & Personal Life (COMING SOON)

Life on Xohana Station means building something lasting. Use your Downtime between Quests to upgrade your quarters, personalize your space, or start community projects with friends. Housing upgrades, once live, will use Badges for special perks, like more room for storing monster carcasses for harvest, secret meeting spots, or private workspaces for crafting and research. Dream up renovations, start a community garden, or simply throw a party. Your space, your story.

Vehicles, Travel & Exploration (COMING SOON)

Getting around the Xohana universe isn’t as simple as snapping your fingers…unless you’re lucky enough to have the Oopsie Button charged! Regular travel, trade routes, and ticketed Spelljammer journeys are all part of life on the station.

Between Quests, you may invest in your own vehicle, upgrade it with Badges or gold for better travel, storage, or defense, or join up with friends to pilot larger ships.

Have a wild idea for a racing league, smuggling ring, or courier service? Bring it to the Helper or Organizer team to explore what’s possible.

Community Groups (COMING SOON)

There are multiple ways to band together, collaborate, and make your mark on the Xohanaverse. These group types scale from intimate crews to powerful server-wide organizations, each with their own role and flavor.

Crews

Crews are the smallest unit, a tight-knit band of up to six characters who adventure and grow together. Forming a Crew allows crew members to pool their Badges to help the lowest-level member catch up. To form a crew, everyone must start at the same level. Progression happens as a group: no one can advance to the next level until all crew members have reached the previous level. This fosters real camaraderie and shared storylines, and it is the only way in which Badges may be transferred from your character to another.

Guilds

Guilds are player-driven organizations where characters unite around a common theme or goal: crafters, mercenaries, scholars, chefs, and more. Guilds operate server-wide and are led by either a Helper (with at least a month in that role), an Organizer, or a GM. Each guild must have a charter, clear joining requirements, and transparent rules for maintaining or losing membership. While membership is open to any qualifying character, guild leaders and members shape the culture, ambitions, and upgrades of the guild as they pursue in-game goals together.

Factions

Factions are the domain of GMs: lore-rich, story-driven entities created and managed by a single GM. Each GM can establish one faction, building it as a persistent piece of the universe with unique storylines, privileges, and narrative rewards. Factions can include things like powerful noble houses, criminal syndicates, secret societies, or military forces. Only that GM can run official stories or distribute rewards for their faction, making every faction a unique part of Xohana’s living setting. Additionally, GMs can use their Ministry Medals to upgrade their Faction for additional benefits.

Organizations

Organizations are the largest, server-spanning groups, often rooted in the lore of Xohana itself, such as the Ministry or other foundational powers. These are open for all GMs and players to interact with. Anyone can join (subject to in-character rules or requirements), and any GM can run stories or events involving these organizations. Think of them as the backbone institutions of the station and the universe: always present, always in motion, and shaping life at every scale.

Staff Teams

Xohana runs on teamwork behind the scenes:

  • Helpers: The welcoming committee, question-answerers, and conflict-resolvers.
  • Organizers: System stewards and document wranglers, keeping the admin side running smoothly.
  • Game Masters (GMs): The architects of adventure, spinning storylines and running sessions across the universe.
  • Lorekeepers: The historians and archivists, weaving player actions and session outcomes into the evolving story of Xohana.
  • Dragonspeakers: The tech wizards, handling Avrae, automation, and server code.
  • Merchants: Volunteer roleplayers who make the market pulse with life and personality.
