The Skycaller Compass in Dungeons & Dragons 5e

The Skycaller Compass

Wondrous Item

Legendary Trial of the Far Horizon

True Bearing:
While holding the compass, you always know true north, your exact direction of travel, and the shortest safe route to any location you have previously visited or can clearly name.
Pathfinder’s Grace:
You gain advantage on Wisdom (Survival), Intelligence (Nature), and navigator’s tools checks related to travel, navigation, pursuit, and avoiding natural hazards.
Safe Passage:
You and allies within 30 feet cannot become lost by non-divine means, whether by storm, darkness, shifting terrain, or magical misdirection of lesser power.
Horizon’s Whisper:
As an action, you may ask the compass for guidance toward a goal, creature, place, or object. For the next hour, the needle points toward the most fated or reliable path forward rather than the most direct one.
Wayfinder’s Step:
Once per short rest, you may use a bonus action to instantly move yourself up to 30 feet to an unoccupied space you can see, appearing there in a swirl of wind and pale light.

Enhanced Properties (Post-Attunement)

Call of the Open Horizon:
The compass can now guide you not only to known destinations, but to hidden roads, lost shrines, secret harbors, and places that are meant to be found by fate but concealed from ordinary sight.
Unerring Route:
You and allied creatures traveling with you automatically succeed on checks to navigate natural terrain and have advantage on saving throws against magical effects that would confuse, redirect, or trap your movement.
Traveler’s Favor:
Difficult terrain caused by natural environments does not slow you or allies within 30 feet of you while you travel.
Horizon Unbound:
Once per long rest, you may open the compass and name a destination you know. For 1 minute, you and up to eight willing creatures may travel with supernatural speed, covering a full day’s journey in 1 hour so long as you remain beneath open sky or upon open water.

Special Ability: The Road Between Winds

Once per long rest, you may invoke the full power of The Skycaller Compass and call forth a divine path only the worthy may walk.   As an action, the compass opens and projects a radiant current of sky-blue light in a direction of your choosing. For the next 10 minutes:
  • A shimmering wind-road appears, visible only to you and creatures you choose, stretching up to 1 mile.
  • You and your chosen allies may travel upon this path at incredible speed, as though flying just above the ground or sea.
  • The path ignores chasms, cliffs, rough terrain, shallow water, and similar physical obstacles.
  • Hostile creatures cannot willingly enter or perceive the wind-road unless empowered by divine sight or artifact-level magic.
  • While on the path, allies cannot become lost, restrained, or slowed, and have advantage on Dexterity saving throws.
  • The road appears like a pale ribbon of moving air and horizon-light, vanishing the moment its travelers have passed.

The Skycaller Compass is a divine navigational relic of silver-white metal and pale blue crystal, its needle formed from a feather of living wind suspended above a glass face that reflects not the sky above, but the horizon one is meant to follow. Soft currents stir around it whenever it is opened, and faint whispers can sometimes be heard from within its frame, as though distant roads, sea-lanes, and forgotten paths are calling to be found. Created by Achelous, it is an artifact of guidance, wandering, and the unseen certainty that even the lost may yet find their way.
