Chapter 12 - To the Moonstone We Go!

Dawn had said what? Amber couldn’t believe it. It was just yesterday when Dawn had been so secretive, so angry, so shady about her being a werewolf. And there had been a fight. A shiver ran down her spine as her fingers touched the wounds, one by one. But Dawn had fixed her. She had healed her. So she couldn’t have been all bad, right? And besides, their bond was stronger now, right? She had to believe Dawn felt the same way.

She looked down into Dawn’s eyes, and could detect sorrow, but also a bit of hope. Amber closed her eyes, and wished under her breath, “Please let this bring us closer, and let this not be a trap,” and shakily replied to Dawn in awe and with slight misgivings, “O-okay. Let’s go,”

Dawn’s eyes lit up, and she yelped, “Great! We will leave after supper!” And started hurrying around the room, seeming to be looking for something.

A few hours and a delicious supper later, they were off. Dawn took a different and easier path compared to the night before, which Amber was thankful for, as she found the more advanced path of last night to be quite difficult.

Dawn led her to the same portal house of the night before, though it seemed slightly shoddier, but well, she was basking in the glory of identifying werewolves so it must have looked better.

It was Friday, and as they chatted while walking out of the portal, Amber mentioned she didn’t have anywhere to stay over the weekend while she anxiously awaited the results of the orientation, whether she was accepted or not, and if she was, details.

Dawn offered Amber a chance to stay at Dawn’s house. When Amber’s eyes gleamed with surprise and curiosity, Dawn quickly offered up an explanation: She was the Beta of the pack, and was required to have the second-best house in the high grounds; therefore, she had her own place.

Amber asked if she liked being independent, but Dawn confided in her that she hated feeling lonely, and had felt isolated like an alien from society the entirety of her life. Dawn quickly told Amber about the events of her childhood* (Footnote *: Events occurring in the Last Werewolf.), and Amber marvelled at how much she had endured for such a young age. Dawn was obviously cracking apart into pieces slowly every day. She put her arms around Dawn, and followed as Dawn led the way to the Moonstone.

They were stopped by many, many different wolves asking what they were doing, understanding Dawn left the university early, but not understanding what Amber was doing here.

When Dawn hurriedly told them about a “sign” she had received from the Lunar-sky dimension, some sniffed with disapproval, including a snobbish she-wolf named ‘Mellie’, which in Amber’s opinion seemed horrible; and some nodded with a nice smile, with Dusk from the night before included.

When they finally reached the unique-looking gravel path that led down in a spiral towards a cave that was out of her view, Amber was ecstatic. She was exhausted, but more and more as she and Dawn had talked, the Moonstone visit sounded even more exciting.

Suddenly, Dawn stopped Amber, saying, “This is where we must stop and transform, you are only allowed to be in your purest form when you come down to the sacred caves.”

Amber wasn’t happy about having to transform and leave her clothes behind, so she hurried off into the woods to transform.

As she was carrying her clothes back while she hovered above the ground, she was shocked to see a pretty she-wolf grooming her starlit fur, even though she had seen Dawn during the fight. But back then, she saw a bit too much red to notice.

She dropped her clothes into a pile, and landed neatly, rustling out her fiery feathers before turning to Dawn. “Are you ready?” She squawked anxiously, not sure what to make of the cave that seemed more ominous by the second.

Dawn irritably flicked one of her ears, yapping in return, “Ok, let’s go,” and led the way into the sparkling cave. They inched into the sacred grounds, Dawn not daring to move a whisker, and Amber a feather.

The further they went, the more excited and anxious Amber got, hesitating before each nervous hop of her golden feet. She shook her head, and along with it her brightest plume of feathers. Dawn looked back, seemingly worried about Amber disturbing the holy dwelling-place of the ancient wolves.

Dawn flicked her tail, beckoning to Amber. “We’re almost there,” she hissed softly. Finally the winding rock staircase came to an end, and a enormous glimmering crystal, bigger than she was, stood in front of them. Dawn padded up beside her, her claws scratching at the floor. Dawn whispered, “We’re just in time,” and grinned as she said, “It’s time to catch Moonlight,”
