Wondrous Item
Rare Necromancy
Requires Attunement
- Stronger than Death. When you drop to 0 hit points, Ethel, the spirit within the necklace, rises up to protect your unconscious form as a Shadow (Monster Manual pg 269). As the Shadow, Ethel takes her turn on your initiative, but cannot move from the spot where this amulet occupies. Additionally, she may use her reaction to make a Strength Drain attack, against any creature that moves within 5 ft of her. Ethel returns to the necklace when you regain 1 hit point, or she is reduced to 0 hit points-- at which point she cannot manifest again until the next dusk.
- Nightmare Strikes. When you deal damage to a creature who is heavily obscured by darkness, you may choose one of the following options.
-- Deal an additional 1d6 psychic damage on a successful hit
-- Force the target to make a DC 13 Wisdom saving throw or be Frightened of you until the end of its next turn. A creature Frightened in this way suffers the effects of the condition even if it cannot see you.
- Midnight Trist. This amulet belongs to the witch Eyris, given to her by her dark lover, Ethel, and providing the only means of being together when powerful forces conspire to keep them apart. While she is attuned to this item, it doesn't take up an attunement slot.
This gorgeous, golden amulet is exquisitely crafted and set with ruby and pearl studs. A dark ruby pendent hangs over the wearer's chest in the shape of a heart, attached to the chain with fixtures in the shape of two gold hands-- as if reaching for each other, but only ever able to caress the heart held between them.
Uniquely, this item does not conjure the sound from its moment of creation in the mind of the bearer when they attune. Instead, they suddenly feel regarded by the soul held within, who may choose to share a few words with them, or remain silent. For Eyris, this mostly takes the form of sweet nothings whispered in the ear by her beloved.
